Griffiths Valuation

From around 1847 a valuation of all property and land in Ireland was conducted by surveyors headed by Sir Richard Griffiths. This took a number of years and finished in 1864.

From that date the valuation record was used for the purposes of local taxation (rates)

Griffiths Valuation is a fantastic resource to pinpoint exactly where your ancestors lived. the record includes the name of the occupier, the name of the person they rent from, the acreage (roods and perches) of the land, and the rateable value.

Best place to look is on http://www.askaboutireland.ie/ here you can search for a name or a place. If you find your ancestor you can see what property they owned or leased. Then you can see that property on the map which accompanies the valuation. Then you can compare it to todays map and overhead photo. Next time you visit you can find the exact spot.

http://www.familyulster.com/ will check all this for you and tour you to the place. You never know. You distant family may still live in the area.
