Griffiths Valuation Revision Books

Look out tomorrow for PRONI's release online of the Griffiths Valuation Revision Books.

Griffiths is a great snapshot of heads of household in Ireland around 1860s period. From 1864 these valuations were updated annually until 1930. PRONI is releasing this resource online.

Here you will be able to follow a property through that period to see movement of families and inheritance within families.

Church Records

Church Records

The main churches in Ulster are:
  • Church of Ireland (Anglican) - The established church in Ireland until disestablishment in 1871. Many records date back to the 1600s.
  • Roman Catholic -These registers do not start until the 1820s and most are usually later than that. The registers are almost entirely for baptisms and marriages, some written in Latin.
  • Presbyterian – A number date back to the 1600s but until 1782 it was illegal for Presbyterian ministers to perform marriages even of Presbyterians. Some early Presbyterian baptisms, marriages and burials will be found in the registers of the Church of Ireland.
  • Methodist - The earliest baptism registers date from 1816.
  • Baptist. - The earliest records begin in the 1860s. As the Baptist church does not practice infant baptism, there are no baptism registers.

PRONI are holding a free afternoon conference on 31 January 2013 with talks and discussions and coffee on the Jewish Community in Northern Ireland.

Some tremendously influential members of that Jewish community helped to build Belfast and other parts over many years. Should be worth a visit.

Agricultural Census of 1803

This census was taken as a direct result of the Napoleonic Wars.

The census was conducted in order to ascertain what livestock and crops were available to confiscate. The food would either be used to feed a defending army, or destroyed to prevent to French from using it to feed theirs.

Only the rural parts of Counties Antrim and Down were included and not all returns have survived. The documents are held by PRONI on microfilm or in the papers of Lord Londonderry. The heir to this title was Lord Castlereagh who was British Foreign Secretary at the time.

However if you are fortunate you may be able to see the name of the head of household and a breakdown of all livestock and crops.

These records are found in the papers of The Londonderry family. They are certainly not complete but worth a search for those early 19th Century gems.

Family Ulster will, of course, make a search for you if necessary. Just let us know which area your family lived.
